Introduction

Three PIB releases on 17 March 2026 from the Ministry of Home Affairs comprehensively cover India’s cyber governance architecture: the Indian Cyber Coordination Centre (I4C), rising cyber crime trends, and government cyber awareness initiatives. Components of I4C

• National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal: Centralised portal for reporting all types of cyber crimes.

• Joint Cyber Coordination Teams (JCCTs): State-level coordination for investigation and intelligence sharing.

• Citizen Financial Cyber Frauds Reporting & Management System: For rapid reporting of financial frauds to freeze stolen funds.

Part 2: Cyber Crime in India — Latest Data

Cyber crime has been rising rapidly in India. Key data from the PIB release:

• Financial cyber frauds are the most reported category on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal
• Common types: Online investment fraud, loan app fraud, job fraud, fake customer care, sextortion
• The 1930 helpline has helped freeze funds in crores of rupees in financial fraud cases
• Cyber crime cases involve cross-border criminal networks, especially from Southeast Asia
• Over 28 lakh complaints registered on cybercrime.gov.in since inception

Expansion of CFSL — Central Forensic Science Laboratory

The government has announced expansion of Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs) across India to strengthen forensic investigation capacity, including cyber forensics. This directly supports the I4C ecosystem by providing state-of-the-art forensic support for cyber crime cases.
